Airsoft FAQ
Q. What is An Airsoft Gun?
A. It is a 1:1 scale model of a real gun. The ones we sell shoot 6mm plastic BBs at about 280 feet per second. These BBs usually weigh either .12g, .2g or .25g.
Q. What are the different types of Airsoft Guns?
A. There are three main types of Airsoft Guns.
Spring Cocking / Air Cocking
Pull on the slide of a pistol and you cock the spring. Pull the trigger and away you go. These are usually inexpensive and a first buy. They are often called springers. Shotguns can be spring powered as well.
Gas Operated
The most common is the GBB (Gas Blow Back) pistol. Charge the reservoir in the magazine, pull the trigger and the slide cycles while the BB is shot from the barrel. You have fixed slide guns (Non Blow Backs) , where the slide doesn’t move. There are also shotguns that operate on gas.
Electric Operated
This is the most common type of gun and most often used at the Milsim Tactical Field. A battery powers a motor that turns gears which moves a piston. Speeds are close to 280 fps. About the same as a paintball gun. The automatic electric guns (AEGs) are almost always semi and fully automatic.
Q. What is your FPS recommendation?
A. We believe 375 FPS is very safe, but let's face it, eye protection is the most important safety equipment you can use. Sniper guns can be faster than 350 FPS, but should only be used at distances of GREATER than 50 yards.
Q. What about protection?
A. We can't over emphasize the importantance of eye protection. A full face paintball mask is important for mouth/tooth protection. Yes, we have seen guys lose teeth. We recommend long sleeve clothes.
Q. Orange tips?
A. Keep the orange tip. In most places it’s the law. It’s also a great way to give our local law enforcement officials a break. We support law enforcement and only legal uses of airsoft equipment.
Q. What does FPS stand for?
A. FPS means feet per second. The velocity of the BB as it leaves the barrel.
Q. How do gas guns work?
A. Gas guns use a compressed gas and silicon oil mix called green gas as a propellant. Most Gas guns are semi automatic while some are semi and fully automatic. On Gas Blowback models, gas is discharged to propel the BB forward and the slide to the rear while mimicking the action of a real gun.
Q. How do electric guns work?
A. Electric guns: Most often select fire semi and full auto. A motor runs a gear box that compresses a cylinder compressing air. The electric guns are also reliable and normally last thousands of rounds without trouble. Batteries are rechargeable nicad type. Generally they use 8.4 volt batteries that are similar to r/c car batteries.
Q. What does Blowback mean?
A. Blowback action on a Gas or Electric gun means the slide of the gun will recoil when the gun is fired like a real firearm.
Q. How do I maintain my gun?
A. Want to make your gun last longer? BURST YOUR FIRE. Don't just spray and pray. Also, a little spray of pure silicon goes a long way. Swab your barrel. When it comes to maintaining your gear box, you can do yearly re-lubrications.
Q. What is a Joule?
A. A Joule is a measurement used to calculate the power of the gun and is more accurate than using Feet Per Second. It is a formula combining the weight and velocity of a projectile to come up with the force it will hit the target with. The higher the Joule number the more powerful the gun is.
Q. What is Hop-Up?
A. A Hop-Up or Spinup system puts an upwards spin on the BB as it goes down the barrel. This reduces the affects of gravity to increase the flight time and range of the BB.
Q. What does Fully Automatic mean?
A. Fully Automatic. When the trigger is depressed and held the gun will keep firing until the trigger is released.
Q. What does Semi-Auto mean?
A. Semi Automatic. It means, each pull the trigger the gun, will fire once.
Q. What if the item I purchased is out of stock?
A. If the item is out of stock, that means that it is on back-order. Restocking times vary and could be from one week to up to a month . You will be notified when the item is scheduled to be restocked and when you can expect delivery.
